KM 15, one year type, issued while the area was under German control, during World War I. Half dollar size copper coin (28mm), with a crown on the obverse.
Early in World War I, the Allied Powers took steps to capture the German colonies around the world. German East Africa was blockaded, and then invaded. Since the colony could not receive coinage from Germany, a local mint was established in Tabora. Some of the mint's equipment was salvaged from two German warships that had been sunk in the area. In late 1916, Tabora was overrun by Allied forces and the mint was closed.
